<p><FONT color=#000000><I>Ciudad de México– </I>La máscara en la lucha libre comenzó siendo un "fracaso rotundo" porque no le sirvió a su primer usuario, pero gracias a la perseverancia de su creador acabó convirtiéndose en el elemento más característico de esta disciplina en México, a mitad de camino entre el deporte y el espectáculo.</p>
<p>Víctor Martínez, hijo del artífice de la primera máscara, explicó en una entrevista con Efe, que el origen de este atuendo fue casual y se debió a la petición de un estadounidense, y no de un mexicano.</p>
<p>Su padre, Antonio H. Martínez, originario de León, en el estado central de Guanajuato, fundó un taller de zapatos deportivos en busca de "fama y fortuna".</p>
<p>"En 1933 surge la lucha libre en México y a mi papá le gustó tanto que se convirtió en asiduo", relató Martínez, al recordar que entonces la mayoría de luchadores procedía de EEUU.</p>
<p>Entre ellos "Ciclón McKey", que le encargó "una capucha, algo que se amarre en la cabeza como un zapato para no perder la identidad", rememoró Martínez.</p>
<p>Su padre fabricó una máscara de dos piezas elaborando primero un molde, tal y como hacía con los zapatos.</p>
<p>"Fue un fracaso rotundo porque nunca una cabeza puede ser como una horma, no le halló la cuadratura", señaló el ahora también fabricante de máscaras.</p>
<p>A "Ciclón McKey" la careta no le quedó, por lo que se marchó enojado, mientras el autor del atuendo llegaba a la conclusión precipitada de que el negocio no iba a resultar.</p>
<p>No obstante, a los seis meses "Ciclón McKey" regresó a "Deportes Martínez" y pidió seis unidades con una mayor inversión de dinero para no repetir errores pasados.</p>
<p>"Mi padre inventó las diecisiete medidas que me legó", las cuales están patentadas para combatir la piratería, indicó.</p>
<p>Las máscaras quedaron tan "perfectamente bien" que McKey pasó a ser conocido como "La Maravilla Enmascarada" y cada vez más luchadores las incluyeron en su vestuario.</p>
<p>Hoy día la pérdida de esa careta en el ring significa la deshonra y se resuelve en combates mano a mano, donde también se apuestan cabelleras.</p>
<p>El primer mexicano que la usó fue "Murciélago Velázquez", seguido de "El Solitario", "Blue Demon", "Tiniebla", "Huracán Ramírez", "Místico" o "El Santo", que con sus éxitos en el ring y el cine convirtió la máscara en leyenda.</p>
<p>El luchador "Sangre Azteca", que en su máscara muestra el calendario de la civilización precolombina del mismo nombre, explicó a Efe que este accesorio "es el sello de la lucha libre" porque "te identifica a ti como luchador, te convierte en tu personaje".</p>
<p>Según el Consejo Oficial de la Lucha Libre Mexicana, actualmente existen 250 luchadores, la mayoría mexicanos, aunque también hay dos japoneses, un ruso y un italo-americano.</p>
<p>El Arena México es el recinto más grande construido para esa disciplina en el país, con una capacidad de 16.400 espectadores.</p>
<p>Una encuesta nacional difundida a finales del año pasado situaba la lucha libre como el cuarto deporte más popular de México, con un 6% de seguidores, por detrás del fútbol, el baloncesto y el béisbol.</p>
<p>La máscara también ha evolucionado en los 77 años que lleva abierta la tienda de los Martínez en la capital mexicana.</p>
<p>Ahora se hace de cuatro piezas para adaptarse mejor a la curvatura de la cabeza y, mientras antiguamente se hacía con cuero y piel de cabra, lo que provocó la calvicie en muchos luchadores, ahora se emplean micropieles, rasos y sintéticas para su elaboración.</p>
<p>El precio de este atuendo oscila entre los 55 y los 140 dólares.</p>
<p>"La primera máscara tenía que inventarse en México porque ya los aztecas luchaban enmascarados", opinó Martínez.</p>
<p>Actualmente, el producto se exporta a Irlanda, España, Alemania, Francia, Italia, Australia, Japón, Estados Unidos, Ecuador, Colombia y otros países latinoamericanos, gracias también al éxito de producciones hollywoodienses como "Nacho Libre".</p>
<p>"Si no existiera la máscara ya no habría morbo en la lucha libre, desaparecería el bien y el mal", aseguró el artesano.</p>
<p>Además, concluyó, "sin máscara el luchador no es nadie, la máscara siempre existirá". </FONT></SPAN></p>
